The Sanctuary Our Lady of Ghisallo, grew from local popular devotion, and is situated on the hill of the same name, in the municipality of Magreglio, Valtassina. One of the most beautiful places in Lombardy, it is at the highest point on Asso-Bellagio road, where the view is so beautiful it leaves nature lovers breathless. This small alpine Ghisallo chapel represents a integration of religious devotion, tourism and sport. The little church, Icon of Our Lady and baby Jesus, precious to the hearts of local devotees, has become the center of Marian devotion, and an appealing refuge for those who are looking for protection and comfort. Pope Pius XII, with his decree of October 13th 1949, he declared Our Lady of Ghisallo “Patroness Saint of Italian Cyclists” and the small Sanctuary quickly became the “Sanctuary of International Cycling”. It is a special place and landmark for cyclists, who stop here and happily return as pilgrims to pay tribute to their Patroness Saint. The Madonna del Ghisallo Cycling Museum has also been built at this site and contains many mementos and valued memorabilia that belonged to national and international cycling champions.
